Washington University School of Medicine
Ruth Gemima Nakiwala Katumba was born in Kampala, Uganda in February 1992. She was the firstborn of two very academically driven parents, Drs. James Wilson, and Gertrude Sebunya Muwanga. Growing up the eldest daughter with parents who each had two PhDs to their name set the stage for a life of curiosity, a drive to find the right answers, and a need to make life better for the humans she cared about. She went to Makerere University College of Health Sciences at Mulago National Referral Hospital where she studied Biomedical Sciences with a specialty in Hematology. Rather than continue with clinical medicine, an option for her mentors were keen for her to pursue, her experiences at the hospital, National Cancer Institute, and National Blood Bank where she did her training rotations led her to a career focused on research.
She has a master’s degree in Public Health with a specialty in Epidemiology and Biostatistics with a focus on Infectious Disease, Cancer Epidemiology, and Environmental Health. She has been working with the Divisions of Oncology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis since her graduation in May 2019 in several different research capacities with tasks directed both towards clinical trial and patient management as well as data management, analysis, and research results presentation. She is a peer-reviewed published author and certified peer reviewer. She currently works as a Clinical Research Data Coordinator for the Sarcoma program. Her primary goal is to conduct relevant and sound research whose findings can be utilized realistically to improve individual and population health.
