I am the Hedinger Professor and Chair of Surgical Oncology at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) in Portland, OR. I also serve as the HPB Fellowship Director and Physician-in-Chief of the Knight Cancer Institute at OHSU. After graduating with honors from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, I completed general surgery residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. After training, I pursued both a surgical oncology and hepatopancreatobiliary surgery fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. For ten years I practiced at Virginia Mason in Seattle prior to being recruited to OHSU in 2021. My clinical practice and research interests encompass all aspects of malignant disease of the liver, bile ducts and pancreas. I have been funded by the AAS, NIH/NIDDK, ASCO and Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation. Currently, I sit on the editorial boards of Surgery, HPB, Annals of Surgical Oncology, and Journal of Surgical Oncology. I have served on the NCI Pancreas Task Force, ASCO GI Advisory Council and ASTRO Liver Cancer Guidelines Committee. Furthermore, I am the lead surgeon of the International Cholangiocarcinoma Research Network (ICRN), Vice-Chair of SWOG Surgery Committee, GI Surgery Working Group Chair at ECOG-ACRIN and Chair of the Cancer Standards Development Committee at the American College of Surgeons CSSP.
