Improving Sarcoma Care Globally: Access, Equity, Advocacy and Policy

(P 142) THE SARCOMA EUROPEAN AND LATIN AMERICAN NETWORK (SELNET) PROJECT: OVERVIEW OF THE MAIN RESULTS OF THE SELNET REGISTRY

Objective: The Sarcoma European and Latin American NETWork (SELNET) project is an international initiative, funded by the H2020 program, which seeks to create a network of sarcoma expert centers in Latin America (LATAM), with the final aim of improving prognosis of sarcoma patients in this territory. One of the pitfalls in sarcoma management is the lack of reliable epidemiologic data due to the absence of sarcoma registries. Among the several activities of SELNET, a web-based international registry has been started, in order to be used as an institutional database for SELNET centers as well as a sarcoma registry in LATAM. Here we present the preliminary activity of this registry.

Methods: A web-based international registry was designed. Prospective adult patients with soft-tissue sarcoma (STS), bone sarcoma (BS), or GIST, as well as retrospective cases diagnosed since 2005, could be enrolled. European centers could also register patients in the platform. Approvals from ethics committees were obtained in all participating sites. Pseudo-anonymized demographics (gender, date of birth), tumor characteristics (location, size, histologic diagnosis), therapy and outcome data were collected.

Results: From July 2019 to June 2023, a total of 4,469 cases have been registered, with 2,345 (52.4%) patients from LATAM and 2,124 (47.5%) from Europe, belonging to 27 Latin American and 15 European sites. For the entire series, 48.2% were male and 51.7% female, with median age at diagnosis 52 years (18-95). The current global sarcoma type distribution is STS 82.3%, BS 10.2%, and GIST 2.9% (data entry still ongoing).

Conclusion: The SELNET registry represents the first international sarcoma database in LATAM. SELNET's interdisciplinary approach and collaboration among research centers in both LATAM and Europe strengthen the project's impact. The distribution of registered centers between LATAM and Europe demonstrates the project's global reach and enables a diverse representation of patient populations. This project paves the way for similar collaboration models in other rare tumors in LATAM.
