Michael Lizardo is a staff scientist in the laboratory of Dr. Poul Sorensen at BC Cancer, Vancouver Canada. Michael earned his Ph.D. in Medical Biophysics at the University of Western Ontario, Canada and he completed his post-doctoral fellowship at the Pediatric Oncology Branch at the National Institutes of Health, Maryland, USA. Michael’s research specializes in metastasis biology, mRNA translation, and osteosarcoma. In the Sorensen group, Michael’s research is focused on identifying new molecular targets in cellular stress (mRNA translation) adaptation pathways in order to inhibit lung metastasis development in bone cancer. His research often involves gene knockdown studies, as well as vetting novel, molecularly-targeted drugs/compounds (with industry collaborations) in 2D and 3D in vitro cell culture, PDX-derived models, lung tissue explant ex vivo models (PuMA), and evaluating their anti-metastatic potential as monotherapy or in combination with chemotherapeutics in animal models of metastatic bone cancer.
