Just over 30 years ago, doctor van Tinteren started as a statistician at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) in the clinical trials and registry department. He became specialized in the design of clinical trials and their analysis, including survival analysis and regression analysis. He wrote his PhD thesis on the design of clinical trials for the evaluation of positron emission tomography. As a senior statistician, he has more than 20 years of experience in Medical-Ethics Review Committees and in international Data Monitoring Committees. In 2014 he became head of the clinical trials department at NKI. At any one time, the NKI has approximately 250 studies open for patient inclusion and included more than 3,000 patients annually. In September 2020 he moved from the NKI to the Princess Maxima Centre, a specialized research hospital in the field of paediatric oncology. As head of the Trial and Data Centre he is now involved in the design of studies in children and responsible for clinical data management and analysis in general. Since 1993, Dr van Tinteren has been involved in the children’s renal study group as lead statistician and manages the complete data set of the group.
