Prof. Sys is an oncological orthopedic surgeon and treats patients with bone and soft-tissue tumors. She has a special interest in bone reconstruction techniques, biological as well as non-biological. She is also Medical Coordinator of the Ghent University Hospital Cancer Center. Her main topic there is data registration and prospective sample collection, and is an active advocate of leadership in cancer care and research collaboration initiatives. Patient (advocacy) involvement in strategy and cancer policy is essential. At the scientific level she is active in the Ghent Sarcoma Consortium, which studies preclinical and translational models for prognosis prediction and treatment response for sarcoma patients. A second research field encompasses the improvement of bone reconstruction techniques by using patient-specific instruments and virtual planning.
