Kurt has been a surgeon/scientist in the University of Pittsburgh Department of Orthopaedic Surgery since 2010. He performed his residency at Pitt and his fellowship in musculoskeletal oncology at the University of Toronto. Since being recruited back to Pitt, Kurt has held K08 and R21 awards from the National Cancer Institute. His active laboratory has also been supported by multiple foundations including the Sarcoma Foundation of America, the Shadyside Hospital Foundation, MIB Agents, and others. Among his accomplishments include the establishment of the Musculoskeletal Oncology Tumor Registry and Tissue Bank, an invaluable resource that has enabled many collaborations. He is a founding member of the Pittsburgh Cure Sarcoma patient advocacy group and the Pittsburgh Sarcoma Research Collaborative. Weiss has held international and national leadership positions on the Connective Tissue Oncology Society Board of Directors, and the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society, for which he presently serves on the Executive Committee and as Chair of the Research Committee. He helped to establish the Kurt. R Weiss Scholarship for Wish Kids with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Besides being a sarcoma surgeon/scientist, Weiss is also a sarcoma survivor. He and his wife Laura are proud to be native Pittsburghers as are their children Connor and Annaliese.
