Medical Student
University of Miami Miller School of Medicine
I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with minors in Chemistry and Social Science & Medicine from the University of Miami in May 2019. In July 2021, I started the MD/MPH program at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, with a tentative graduation date of 2025.
Starting in November 2017, I worked in a lab at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine Department of Biochemistry. The main objective was to characterize the Fanconi anemia (FA) pathway, which is involved in DNA repair and genome stability. The work included exploring FANCA, a major protein of the FA pathway, and how it can act as substitute for another protein (RAD52) in DNA-repair pathway used in some cancer cells and, thus, may contribute to anti-cancer therapy resistance. At the end of spring 2018, I was able to propose exploring FANCA as a potential target for a chemical inhibitor or compound. In April 2020, I worked on a project that focused on gender disparities in radiation oncology training programs across countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Spain.
I began medical school in July 2021 and I have since joined several other research projects. This includes projects evaluating an evidence-based behavioral intervention for prostate cancer survivors, investigating surgical decision-making for breast cancer patients found to have a variant of uncertain signicant (VUS) mutation following pre-operative genetic testing and assessing the role of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) testing in monitoring for sarcoma recurrence or progression.
