Duke University
Dr. Julia Visgauss was raised in Long Island, NY and received her Bachelor of Science at New York University. She completed medical school at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD and her residency in orthopaedic surgery at Duke University in Durham, NC. Dr. Visgauss received her fellowship training in musculoskeletal oncology at Mount Sinai Hospital/Princess Margaret Cancer Center in Toronto, ON Canada. She has extensive training in invasive surgical techniques including resection of extremity and pelvic tumors, limb salvage surgery, and mega-prosthetic and custom implant reconstructions. She enjoys all aspects of orthopedic oncology including surgery, pathology, and research, but most of all she values the relationships she develops with her patients. Julia is passionate about sarcoma research and spends time in the lab two days each week studying metastatic behavior in sarcoma. Her work is specifically focused on chondrosarcoma, identifying drivers of aggressive metastatic behavior, and discovery of novel therapeutics. She is involved in multiple clinical and translational collaborative research projects both at the national and international level. Her research is consistently highlighted at national and international sarcoma meetings each year. Dr. Visgauss is also a dedicated teacher and mentor in the Duke undergraduate, SOM, and residency programs, with a track record of mentees successfully pursuing careers and medicine and science. In the last few years she has received the MSTS Young Investigators Award and Sarcoma Strong Research Grant, and numerous research awards within the Duke Orthopedic Department. When Dr. Visgauss is not in clinic, surgery, or the lab, she enjoys running, hiking, and traveling with her husband, two sons, and lab mix.
