Associate Professor
Vanderbilt University Medical Center
I am an Anatomic and Clinical Pathologist (AP/CP) and Dermatopathologist with ample experience in both general surgical pathology and dermatopathology. Briefly, my story so far started following completion of two years of surgical pathology residency in my country of origin (Paraguay), after which I relocated to the U.S. (Boston, Massachusetts) as a research fellow under the supervision of Dr. Martin C. Mihm Jr. Following two years in Boston, I matched and later completed an AP/CP Pathology residency at Baystate Medical Center, then part of the Western Campus of Tufts University School of Medicine (now UMass) in Springfield, MA. I continued my training by undertaking an Oncologic Surgical Pathology Fellowship at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) where I participated in various projects under the guidance of Dr. Cristina Antonescu. This fellowship was followed by a 2-year Dermatopathology fellowship at the University of South Florida/Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL under the direction of Dr. Jane L. Messina during. It was towards the end of my USF/Moffitt fellowship. As you know, I have worked at University of Alabama at Birmingham Pathology Department as a dermatopathologist/general surgical pathologist involved in the dermatopathology (large excisions), thoracic, breast, head and neck and bone/soft tissue services. I was also the medical director of both the immunohistochemistry and research core laboratories. From October 2021 onwards I have been working at Vanderbilt University Medical Center where I am the medical director of the histology laboratory and chief of the bone, soft tissue and skin section.
